Science at King’s Magna

At King’s Magna, we focus on teaching an understanding of science through investigative and theoretical work.

The school has dedicated science laboratories for practical lessons and for students to use for enrichment activities.

Year 6

Year 6 pupils have three lessons of science each week with specialist subject teachers. Their bespoke curriculum is designed to bridge the gap between Key Stage Two and Three. Lessons focus on the national curriculum with lots of practical lessons and an end of key stage test as part of their end of year examination week.

Key Stage Three

From Year 7, students have four lessons per week and begin learning science as three separate disciplines: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Lessons follow the national curriculum, and students are assessed practically and on content, using investigation work and GCSE-style examinations.

Exciting Experiments That Are Part of Something Bigger

In 2023, King’s Magna and Chapter House entered the MARSBalloon Project to send “egg” capsules into space to experiment with how a 1p coin, toothpaste, photographic film, pumpkin seeds and rock samples would respond to the gas pressure, temperature and radiation levels on Mars.

The experiment will help future explorers prepare for living in a strange and hostile environment.

Be Awarded For Your Love of Science

There are lots of opportunities to enter external awards and competitions with local schools:

  • Many students enter the CREST Award which is the British Science Association’s scheme to inspire young people to think and behave like scientists or engineers.
  • Enter the Physics, Biology, or Chemistry Olympics. Last year, King’s Magna won the Physics Olympics hosted at St. Peter’s School.
  • Get involved in Queen Ethelburga’s own hosted events, like the IET Education Faraday Challenge that King’s Magna hosted in 2023.
